So, What Will You Wear to Work

Many of us are still working, and there was a time when the work uniform was very safe, boring and sometimes almost dull, apart from the eighties, maybe! In the eighties, we used to sell suiting in a crepe fabric that came in many gorgeous colours, and we sold these suits for years. That was what people wore to work.

I remember all the Caroline Eve ladies wearing a jade suit one day and hot pink the next, with satin collars and buttons. Sounds quite odd now, but this was “the suit.” Then something changed and everything became very corporate, with work clothing becoming darker and more practical, possibly black or navy, and maybe a coloured top if you were lucky. You could end up looking like you worked at a bank or a doctor’s office, even when you didn’t. Thank goodness things have changed!

Obviously, some workplaces still have restrictions, but overall, many of us have full-time or part-time positions that allow us to show some of our personality through what we wear. I think you should go to work feeling great, comfortable and stylish, without too much hassle for the task ahead.

For many years, I would have said my work uniform started with a pair of black pants, then seasonal tops and accessories would change the look. But these days, we can do even better than that.

When starting a workwear wardrobe, consider pieces you can mix and match, along with the everyday accessories you’ll be wearing or carrying. It’s lovely when everything works together easily, making getting dressed each day that little bit simpler. Another consideration is how easy your clothing is to care for, particularly when it’s something you’re going to wear on repeat.

I do think the lines around clothing have blurred a little over the years. You don’t necessarily have to have a “going out outfit” and a “work outfit” anymore. I often still have a holiday or weekend wardrobe, especially during the summer months when I like to embrace a more casual look. And, obviously, there’s always room for a special outfit for a special occasion.

I recently travelled overseas and simply packed dresses. One item and you’re done! I think this idea can apply beautifully to a workwear wardrobe too. One garment to think about each morning, with a different colour, print or feel for each day. You might even wear the same work-appropriate shoes, but changing the dress gives you a fresh new look every time.

Skirts are very much on trend this summer. Try a printed skirt and simply change the top, shirt, or blouse to create several different outfits with fewer pieces. We also have skirts with matching tops or blouses, giving you the option to wear them together one day, then style the skirt with something completely different the next.

Of course, pants are still there, but I would move away from darker pants over summer and perhaps embrace a new colour. Try something like brown, olive or natural, or perhaps a new pant shape that shows a little ankle and feels lighter for the summer months. You might be thinking, brown? Yes, brown is a very now colour and looks fabulous paired with white and blue. That makes it easy to add something like a striped shirt or spotted blouse.

Just arrived at Caroline Eve stores is our Linen Look range. This is such a fabulous fabrication for everyday workwear. The pieces are easy to mix and match, making your wardrobe work harder and, in the long run, making things a little easier on the purse too. The styling is comfortable, classic, and timeless.

Perhaps one of the best bonuses? You get that lovely linen look and feel, with less fuss. Made from 100% polyester, the fabric is easy to care for and less prone to creasing than traditional linen, so you can spend less time ironing and more time enjoying comfortable, effortless style.

Workwear doesn’t have to mean dark, corporate or dull. A little colour, an easy dress, a versatile skirt or a lighter pair of pants can bring personality back into your working wardrobe, while still keeping things comfortable and practical.
